Q: Where and when is the best place to watch the northern lights? Where is it best to stay?

Ann, Los Angeles, USA

A: There is NO best place. You have to factor in the weather (clear sky) and auroral activity, so it depends on the day. The northern lights are only visible when it’s dark so winter without a full moon is best.

But the further you go from the capital area, where three out of four Icelanders live, the better as there is less light pollution.

So Bakkafjörður, Northeast Iceland, must be the place, as it is one of the furthest places you can get from the crowded South Iceland.
