Q: What are the best tourist attractions in Iceland? Some of us French are coming to Iceland for a week from next week and would like to know if there is a place in Iceland where French or English speaking people meet for a chat or a coffee. Is the Youth Hostel far from the capital at all?
A: The best tourist attractions depend entirely on each tourist’s personal interests, but some of the most popular “must sees” are the Golden Circle (Geysir, Gullfoss and Þingvellir), Lake Mývatn, Snæfellsnes and Jökulsárlón. But I would really recommend you go through and make a list of the most interesting attractions to you personally!
The English-Speaking Union of Iceland has a Facebook page you can join and the Academie Française is also active in Iceland and has a meeting place of its own. Both organise events from time to time. Failing that, you will find English and French speakers (both tourists and residents) in most cafés on most days of the year.
There are quite a lot of youth hostels all over Iceland. If you are specifically referring to HI Hostels, then there is one just out of town next to the beautiful Laugardalur park, and there is another on Bankastræti, in the very centre of Reykjavík. There are other HI Hostels around Iceland as well.
