Q: I'm studying abroad in England this coming autumn and I have a 16 hour layover in Iceland.
I was just wondering, what are some things I could do/see around Keflavík airport in that time? As a student, I need to do things on a budget and don't have much money for transportation and such, but I really want to make the most of this as I have never been to Iceland before!
Also, I'm there overnight at the end of September. What do you think my chances are of seeing the northern lights from the airport?
Thanks so much for the help!

A: With that time, I’d recommend a tour to the Blue Lagoon. With Reykjavik Excursions you can get transportation to and from the airport—on shuttles departing hourly—as well as admission to the lagoon for ISK 10,500 (USD 80; EUR 70).
If you’d prefer to do something else, your best option would be to take the Flybus into Reykjavík and go on some other organized tour or activity departing from there, or plan your own sightseeing walk of the city.
In regards to the northern lights, it’s really hard to say. Your odds are much better at the end of September, than say, in August, but still impossible to predict. If you’re there after nightfall you might have a chance, but other factors also come into play, like clouds.
