Q: Where have all the icebergs in Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon gone? I can’t see them on the webcam!
Judith, United States
A: The number of icebergs in the lagoon, which calve from the glacier’s edge, fluctuates but you are right, there appears to be not a single iceberg in Jökulsárlón. Do not despair. They’re simply gone with the wind… but not too far. Conditions have been very windy in this part of the country in the past few weeks. At first, the December winds blew the smallest icebergs toward the glacier. Then, near hurricane-force winds hit the area on December 29. So powerful was the weather that it blew every iceberg in the lagoon toward the glacier. They may be out of the webcam’s view, but rest assured they haven’t gone too far. Once you see them again, you’ll know the wind has turned. Here is a link to the webcam.
