Driving in Iceland in April

Vopnafjarðarheiði mountain pass. The picture is taken April 1, last year (not kidding). Photo: Páll Stefánsson.

Q: I’ve rented a 2WD car for April 3-14 for driving the Ring Road. Will a 2WD do or do I need a 4WD? I have no idea about the weather in April.

Waranya, Thailand.

A: We recommend a 4WD, even in April, because the weather is quite unpredictable and roads could still be snow-covered or icy.

Easter is early this year (March 27), but even when it’s been in April, we’ve often experienced what we call páskahret or Easter cold spell. A number of people remember travel delays during such a storm.

Even though the calendar tells us Easter is in March this year, the weather gods might still decide to send us a winter storm in April. Just in case they do, reserve a 4WD.
