Q: Are there thrift stores in Reykjavík? Do you have any recommendations for places to buy Icelandic wool items second hand?

Diane, US

A: Yes, there are several thrift stores in Reykjavík. The only flea market in Reykjavík, Kolaportið, at Tryggvagata 19, which is downtown, sells second hand clothing and also carries Icelandic sweaters, lopapeysur, at reasonable prices. Their number is +354 562 5030. It’s only open on weekends. You can visit their Facebook page and read a recent article about them here.

The Red Cross operates four thrift stores in the greater Reykjavík area, three of them downtown: at Laugavegur 116, Laugavegur 12 and Skólavörðustígur 12. The fourth one is in Hafnarfjörður, at Strandgata 24. Here is a link to their Facebook page. You can call +354 554-6626 for information.

Finally, the Salvation Army operates two thrift stores: Hertex clothes market at Garðastræti 6, downtown Reykjavík, phone number +354 561-3277, and Hertex clothes market at Vínlandsleið 6-8, 113 Reykjavík, phone number +354 421-2859.

There are other thrift stores as well, run by charities, but they may not be as centrally located as most of the ones listed above.
