The National Gallery of Iceland is holding a retrospective exhibition of the works of sculptor Sigurjón Ólafsson (1908–1982), whose museum at Laugarnestangi, on the north coast of Reykjavik, became in 2012 a department of the NGI. Sigurjón was one of the most influential Icelandic artists in the postwar era, but the foundation of his career he laid in Denmark during the 1930s and the 1940s. In addition to his active and creative participation of the Danish avant-garde in the perilous era of the occupation of Denmark, he was throughout his life in the forefront of Icelandic sculpture.

The Sigurjón Ólafsson Museum at Laugarnes, in Reykjavik, displays a selection of the sculptor’s works from his schooling period in Copenhagen, 1928–1935, while key works from 1936–1982 are exhibited at the National Gallery of Iceland.
