Flís - Playing Icelandic Folk Songs

Flís - Playing Icelandic Folk Songs

IR wandered into a Flís show in the tiny town of Siglufjorður a few weeks ago, and has been hooked on their album "Vottur" ever since. Their LP is out on 12 Tónar's label. Flís is Helgi Sv. Helgason on drums, Valdimar Kolbeinn Sigurjónsson on double bass, and Davíð Þór Jónsson on piano. The band got together in 1998 when its members met at a music school in Reykjavík. They started with traditional jazz, then moved on to more experimental improvised music ranging from drum and bass to ambient, reggae, polka and beyond. Lately, the trio has revisited their roots, playing Icelandic folk songs and popular Icelandic music. The band members have played the circuit of European festivals and on numerous albums in Iceland and abroad. Flís performs regularly in and around Reykjavik. The band´s motto: If we can´t play it, nobody can. Listen to "Bláu augun," the first track on Vottur, below.Flís - Bláu Augun.mp3
