Thórsmörk, a Highland Paradise

Thórsmörk, a Highland Paradise

Watch this audio slideshow about Thórsmörk, an area in Iceland’s southern highland.

It is bordered by the glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull, and the rivers Krossá, Markarfljót and Thröngá. The vegetation in Thórsmörk is varied and it’s a popular outdoor recreation area.

It also marks the beginning and end of a number of hiking paths, the best known of which is Laugavegur, which leads to Landmannalaugar, and the path across the Fimmvörduháls ridge, which leads to Skógar.

The lava flows and ash fall from the volcanic eruption on Fimmvörduháls in the spring have now transformed part of the landscape in Thórsmörk, including two new mounds that were created in the blast, Magni and Módi.

In Norse mythology, Magni and Módi were the sons of Thór, the god after which the area is named.
