Ever since the first Sunday in Advent on November 27, Iceland has been graced by snowfall and frosty temperatures. The capital’s streets are covered in a fine layer of snow, complementing outdoor Christmas decorations and blinking lights.

Snow-covered spruce branches sway gently in the wind as snowflakes waft down from the heavens. Residents dress warmly to take a stroll in the delightful winter weather, such as this young man walking his dogs.

Still a puppy, the dog with the light-colored legs was particularly playful in the snow. She happens to be the sister of the Icelandic president’s dog, the owner informed us.

Elliðaárdalur, a valley in Reykjavík, is perfect for a walk on a beautiful winter’s day. In frosty weather various sculptures are formed in Elliðaár, the river that runs through it.

The river originates in Elliðavatn, a lake in the outdoor recreation area Heiðmörk. On weekends in December a Christmas market is held by the old farm on the lakeside.

A selection of cookies, handicrafts and Christmas ornaments are for sale and children can engage in various outdoor activities, such as horseback riding.

This young rider, who is only three, went horseback riding for the first time in his life on this day and was very happy about the experience.

In the last two weekends before Christmas, families come to Heiðmörk to select and cut down their own Christmas tree. By the lake, Yule Lads entertain visitors.
