Shoot to Kill… Or for the Thrill (PS)

I was totally shocked this morning when I saw a news story on, stating that the police in Iceland will be armed with guns.

Every police car in the country will not only be equipped with one gun, but two: one Heckler & Koch MP5 machine gun and one Glock 17 polymer-framed short recoil operated, locked breech semi-automatic pistol.

The police force had asked the government for stun guns.

The Ministry of the Interior ordered instead 200 Heckler & Koch MP5 machine guns, among other weapons.

What shocked me most of all is that there hasn’t been any discussion in Iceland about this fundamental change. None at all.

Iceland currently tops world rankings of peaceful countries. We have a very low crime rate and few violent crimes.

And now we’re arming our police with heavy weaponry.

This is absolutely not the development that I, and most Icelanders, want to see.

Until now the police in Iceland have been unarmed, with great success.
