This exclusive boutique hotel, located in Reykjavík’s trendiest postcode, 101, the old city centre, promises a refined, relaxed and luxurious world. Situated inside a severe, grey 1930s building, the interior design has been entirely in the hands of one woman, the hotel’s owner Ingibjörg Pálmadóttir. Enter an elegantly cool refuge in a palette of grey, black and white, with inviting, heated oak floors. 101 hotel is a member of the international Design Hotel chain and has already featured in design bible Wallpaper*.
Designer Pálmadóttir took painstaking care in picking out every detail, from the sheepskin rugs and the walk-in showers, to DVD players, Internet connections, disposable cameras and intimacy kits in every room. “We wanted the hotel to be a place of stylish surroundings with first-class service. The surroundings are not too imposing because we want the guest to be the highlight of the décor,” says Pálmadóttir, a graduate of Parson’s School of Design in New York.
From the minimaly but luxuriously equipped bedrooms, to the Japanese-style baths and steam room in the basement, 101 hotel is sure to fulfil every need. The ground-floor restaurant and bar, offering great modern European/Asian food, has already become the hang-out of the hip crowd. It features a stunning, white wall mural of sensual three-dimensional pods, and the bar has a long, black granite top with cool leather high chairs under a glass ceiling. The adjacent library lounge is invitingly warm with a fireplace and comfortable sofas, and there’s also a state-of-the-art conference centre. Best of all, the 101 hotel is located in the very heart of the city, within a short walking distance of shops, restaurants, bars, museums and nightclubs.
