Iceland Drops Out of Europe Cup after Third Loss

The Icelandic national team in women’s handball played their last game at the European Championship in Serbia on Friday. They lost 30-21 against Russia in the final round of qualifying group D, leaving the competition after three games, not earning a single point.

The game kicked off with a powerful start by Russia, scoring the first four goals. The score at half time was 15-8 for Russia. They maintained the lead throughout the second half, ending the game with a nine-point lead, ruv.is reports.

Rut Jónsdóttir scored the most goals for Iceland, four. Goalkeeper Guðný Jenný Ásmundsdóttir deflected 13 shots.

Russia qualified along with Romania and Montenegro—Montenegro finished at the top of qualifying group D.

Standing European, World and Olympic Champion Norway, led by Icelandic coach Þórir Hergeirsson, is currently in the best position at the European Championship, winning France 30-19 in the first round of the intermediate heat yesterday.
