Five Icelandic athletes will be competing in the upcoming Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. They will be accompanied by 15 people. These include board members of the Icelandic Sports Association, staff and trainers, the Minister of Education, the Minister of Social Affairs, the President of Iceland and the First Lady, ruv.is reports.

According to the Secretary General of the National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland, Líney Rut Halldórsdóttir, final preparations are being made at Sochi. The opening ceremony will take place on Friday.

“The skiing area is looking really good but there are still final touches being made, such as furnishing the athletes’ apartments,” she told rúv.is.

The majority of the Icelandic group will arrive in Sochi on Wednesday. In addition to the five athletes, three coaches, a physical trainer and officials from the Icelandic Sports Association and the Icelandic Ski Association will attend.

The estimated cost per individual is somewhere between ISK 200,000 and ISK 250,000, said Líney Rut, referring to flight and accommodation expenses.

Iceland’s minister of Education, Illugi Gunnarsson, will arrive in Sochi on Thursday and will remain there for a week. The President of Iceland, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, and First Lady Dorrit Moussaieff will attend the opening ceremony and the President will also meet with the leaders of other nations.

Representatives of the Icelandic Lesbian and Gay Organization and Reykjavík Gay Pride presented the Minister of Education with a farewell present earlier today. In a press release, they stated that it is important for Icelanders to uphold gay rights across the world. The status of gay people in Russia is weak and, as the statement says, has taken a turn for the worse since Putin returned to office in 2012.
